Drop Shot Rigging Instructions?

I have read articles in Bassmaster and other magazines. I have also talked to some local bass tournament fisherman and they have said that drop shotting has been a very successful method in deeper water picking smallmouth on rock reefs. I fish Lake Champlain and I can’t figure out how to make one. Maybe some of you know a simple way to make one. Maybe a link that is some what easy to understand. Early Spring Bass Fishing Lures – Which Should I Use to Catch the Lake Record?

This is especially true as the water temperature rises.
3. Spinner Baits – As the water warms in the lake you are fishing, spinner baits will become more and more effective. Bass Fishing – 3 Extremely Effective Hot Weather Bass Baits

As the summer begins to heat up in many areas, so does bass fishing. Many bass fishermen agree that there is no better time of the year to catch bass than the summertime and in this article I will outline 3 extremely effective bass baits to use during the hot summer months. When the weather gets hot the bass baits that are employed should be adjusted to match what the bass are doing, and bass tend to react differently as the weather (and subsequently the water temperatures) heat up.

Bass fishing tends to become a bit more difficult during extremely hot weather, mostly because during extremely hot weather water temperatures can become all but unbearable to bass. As the bass look to cool off, which means that late evening and especially early mornings tend to be the most productive times of the day to fish, bass tend to migrate to deeper water because deeper water means cooler water. This means that during the hottest parts of the day, look for bass to be in deeper water than during the early mornings or late evenings when bass can be found feeding in the shallows.

In any case, the following 3 bass baits should definitely be a part of any serious bass fisherman’s bass fishing arsenal, there’s no doubt about it.

• Top Water Baits – Top water baits such as Zara Spook’s or Pop-R’s are both excellent choices when bass fishing during hot weather, as long as they are used during the early morning or late evenings when the water is completely flat. These baits should be fished around shoreline cover, as bass migrate here during the night when water temperatures cool off. The key to working these bass baits during hot weather is to work them very slowly.
• Lipless Swim Baits – Anytime that you are bass fishing during the heat of the day lipless swim baits such as the KickTail Minnow or traditional lipless baits such as the Rat-L-Trap can be difficult to beat. Count these bass baits down to the depth that bass seem to be holding at and you are good to go. You can accomplish this task by varying the speed of your retrieve. The faster you reel your lipless swim bait in the shallower it will run and vice versa.
• Floating Worms – Four to six inch floating worms in a variety of colors are a great bait when you speak of hot weather bass fishing. Both Texas and Carolina rigged floating worms work very well during the hot summer months and need to be a part of your tackle bag/box. As the day progresses start to look for active bass in deeper water and fish your floating worm Texas style for the best results. Earlier in the day when bass are shallower, rig your floating worm Carolina style.

Best Largemouth Bass Lures

I’ll tell you the colors that are best, the types of lures, and when to use certain lures.

You have to remember certain colors and lures will only work on certain days and certain times of the year. For example, it’s hard to catch Bass on a spinner-bait when it’s 20 degrees outside. Bass are very slow in cold weather, so you have to adapt just like them.

Some basic keys to finding Bass are structure and water currents. Bass love thick vegetation and structures like logs. Also, they are more often found in slow-moving waters or, even better, waters with no current at all. Habitats like man-made ponds, lakes, reservoirs and river backwaters are a good place to start looking. In these areas, find broken trees or structures like vegetation in the water and you’re sure to find Bass lurking.

During spring fishing season you’ll want to look into deeper waters for Largemouth Bass. In these deeper waters you’ll want to find drop offs, channels, or some type of structure underneath the surface.

During the summer fishing season you’ll want to look closer to shore and in shallow waters. Due to high temperatures that cause lack of oxygen for them, they stay out of deeper waters. This is a great time to try night fishing and early morning fishing when it’s cooler outside and the sun is not out.

During the fall fishing season you’re going to find Bass at about the same points as summer but a little deeper at times as well. Now and during summer are great opportunities to fish the structures closer to shore.

Now on to the lure choice. Here I’ll discuss the Best Largemouth Bass Lures for certain times of year and certain structures.

-Top-water lures such as buzz-baits, poppers and other top water plugs are going to be used during the summer and fall months when most Largemouth Bass are in shallow, structured areas.

-Mid-water lures include spinner-baits, crank-baits, minnow plugs and twisters. These will serve you well in spring and fall, with some of them be good for summer as well. Spinners and twisters are good for structured areas during the summer months.

-Deep-water lures are mostly deep-diving crank-baits. You can also use a jig. These are going to be best for early spring and late fall. Best used when the water temperatures have fallen.

And now, color! Overall best color is red and orange for anytime of year. Generally though, you want to use bright colors in clear waters and murky waters use darker colors.

Top Ten Largemouth Bass Fishing Lures

I first started fishing with buzzbaits back in the late 1980′s on the east coast in small lakes and ponds in Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. In the beginning of the buzzbait craze, nobody in these areas had ever fished a buzzbait in any of these waters. They were virtually untouched!

When I arrived at the lake with one of the few buzzbaits that were available, a single blade 3/8 ounce, from Bass Pro Shops, it was like fishing virgin water! On the first cast i landed a 6 pound largemouth that just exploded on the bait in broad daylight! That day I caught more than 15 trophy class largemouth bass on this bait until it was bent beyond use! I quickly went out and tried to find another for the next day and low and behold found one at a local tackle store. I headed out that night to another local lake, Killens Pond, in Dover, Delaware.

I fished open water, flats, pads, near an Island, it didn’t matter! It was like a magic bait! I caught several bass that were in the 5 pound class with one going almost 8 pounds. (Not too bad considering the state record bass is just a shade over 10!.)

I repeated this for years until the word got out and this craze really caught on. Not that it didn’t work anymore, but the heyday of the trophy bass almost every day and night was definitely over.

Since that time, I have fished a variety of waters all over the united states, from Delaware to California, and have taken big bass on buzzbaits, but now there are a few tricks that will help you land some of these bigger bass again in many of these same waters.

I found that the bass have seen most every style of buzzbait that you can think of at this point, work ed in most of the traditional areas in the traditional ways. The trick is to use different baits than most anglers are using in a different way and at a different time.

I start out at 10:00 p.m. and I leave when everyone else is arriving at the lake. I start by using a large buzzbait in black, with a black paddle tail type plastic trailer, with a trailer hook if it is possible, depending on the cover. When this bait doesn’t produce in the traditional areas, I move away from the back creeks and channels, and go into the open flats where one of more green type of vegetation exist. I stay in about 1-2 feet of water and cut the area up like a piece of pie making literally hundreds of casts in a 360 degree circle working the bait in a steady motion, and alternating to small changes in cadence and giving it little hops when the steady ready doesn’t produce what I want.

If this does not produce a decent bass over 5 pounds in about 45 minutes to an hour, I switch to a small, double buzz, and switch colors to black and red with no trailer. This is usually a 1/8 ounce or a 1/4 ounce bait. I use a spinning rod for this with a swivel to reduce line twist. I also use a braided line, in 40 pound test, like Power Pro on a glass or composite rod, and just hesitate a little bit longer before setting the hook.

When all these tactics fail, I go to a Deps buzzjet or a chatterbait, and work it as fast as possible on the surface in the same areas and by the dams.

lake murray south carolina? bass fishing this april…what baits should i use that will work…bass (big)?

it will be around 70 to 90 degrees. what baits should i use to produce bass.

I would use a Culprit junebug colored tube bait. The fish will likely still be on beds, and sight fishing will be your best bet. I have found that tube baits work best for bedding bass. Don’t forget to bring your polarized sunglasses so you can see the beds. Have fun

The hybrid striped bass is a cross between the striped bass (Morone saxatilis) and white bass (Morone Chrysops). This hybrid was first produced in the mid-1960s in South Carolina. The experiment involved using eggs from striped bass and sperm from white bass. However, in the late 1980s, hybrid striped bass culture began to rapidly develop into a major aquaculture in Southeastern United States. Although most states in the south have hybrid producers, most of the production takes place in Mississippi, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, North and South Carolina.

Creating this hybrid has produced fish that have a much better tolerance to extremes in temperature and dissolved oxygen than both its parents. This makes the hybrid more suitable for pond culture.

The hybrid striped bass is also known as whiterock bass or wiper, if it is a cross between a female striped bass and a male white bass. Another accepted common name of this fish is Sunshine Bass, which is actually a cross between a male striped bass and a female white bass.

What are its physical characteristics?

It is a silver, deep-bodied fish that is similar to white bass. It has distinct, broken stripes along its sides and back, extending to its tail. It has two parallel patches of teeth arranged on the base of its tongue.

Where can you find them?

Hybrid striped bass are stocked into different water types for purposes of recreation. But hybrids outside of production ponds are mostly found in fresh water habitats like large lakes and reservoirs. They also thrive in rivers, small lakes or ponds. They are rarely found in areas with dense growth of aquatic weeds or extremely shallow water, except when they are chasing schools of baitfish. They can always be found in open water.

Beginning in late winter, this hybrid tends to stay in deep water, near inflowing streams. In the spring, spawning migrations into upstream areas may take place.

What do they feed on?

The hybrid striped bass are voracious feeders. Young fish feed on mayflies and crustaceans. When they are usually larger than 100 mm. threadfin shad and gizzard shad are a big part of their diet. But species of forage fish have also been found in the stomachs of hybrids. They usually travel and feed in schools and they are most active during periods of low light such as early morning (dawn) and early evening (dusk).

What Factors Affect Their Age and Growth?

Optimum growing conditions for hybrids occur when water temperatures are between 25 0C to 27 0C. They grow rapidly during their first two years of life. They grow from 275 mm. in length in the first year to 550 mm. in the second year and from 225 grams in weight in the first year to 1.5 kg. in the second year. Growth rate is similar in males and females and declines rapidly with increasing age. The life span of hybrid striped bass is 5 to 6 years.

The growth rate of hybrid striped bass in production ponds is affected by the quality of the water, the water temperature, the quality and quantity of food fed to the fish, even the food’s taste and the frequency of the feeding can affect its growth rate. Hybrids are harvested when they reach the weight of 1.5 to 2.5 pounds which is usually when they are 18 to 24 months old.

How Do They Spawn?

The hybrid striped bass is oviparous or egg-laying. Unlike other hybrids, it is fertile. It produces eggs and sperm during the spring when temperatures are between 15 0C and 20 0C. All males mature by the time they are two years of age while all females mature at three years. Males spawn many times during the spawning season while females produce an average of 160,000 eggs per pound of body weight but spawn only once a year.

Depending on the location, spawning season occurs from mid-March to May. It usually lasts four to five weeks.

How Do You Catch Hybrid Striped Bass?

Some baits that have been proven to be effective are soft crayfish, live shad and night crawlers. Trolling with large deep-diving crankbaits also produce good results. Jigs and jigging spoons are also good lures for casting.

By 1997, total regional production of the hybrid striped bass in the southern US was estimated at 5 million pounds or approximately 50% of total production in the US, having a farm-gate value of about $12.5 million. Then they will get tougher to catch and I hope you are just enjoying this time while you still can. Are there blue gills in the pond? Catfish? Minnows or crawdads? If so all the baits that immolate the natural forage will work and hopefully for you a long long time. look up the lake on yahoo maps and get the picture setting to satellite and up real close to see if you can differentiate any of the waters depths and fish the drop offs (especially the drop offs that might offer some shade during the day) with bigger baits and If there are blue gill, try a blue gill pattern swim bait to find the big mama hogs in the shade.
